The
first nine holes were established at Pointe-à-Pierre
circa 1938 by expatriates who worked at the Oil Refinery. But this was
soon abandoned because of World War II, the land area was required for
refinery expansion plus the fact that it was difficult to obtain golfing
equipment from the U.K.
After the War and in 1947, another attempt was made and a nine-hole
course was established. In the 1950’s approval was granted to
add another nine holes to the course and work was completed in 1960,
so by that time Pointe a Pierre had its first eighteen-hole golf course.
Further
expansion to the refinery in 1971 led to a reconfiguration of the course.
The 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th holes had to be relocated. These holes
were established in what was an old housing area known as Mango Avenue.
This area where the 12th, 13th and 14th holes are situated is still
known today as “Mango” and indeed there a mango trees along
the fairways of 12 and 14!
Play
on this revised eighteen-hole course as it exists today started in
1975.
