NATIONAL
JUNIOR GOLF TEAM ANNOUNCED
The President
of the Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association
Mr. Kenny Attai last night announced the
2012 National Junior team to represent
Trinidad and Tobago at the 25th annual
Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships
(CAJGC). This year the tournament will be
held at the Guavaberry Golf and Country Club
in Dominican Republic from July 2 – 6.
Trials for the team selection were held over
two weekends. Day one at the Millenium Lakes
Golf Club was played in blistery conditions
with the wind posing a challenge for the
young golfers. Shining on the day was
fifteen year old Dinesh Jackree who shot a
superb round of level par 71.
The second
day of trials was held last weekend at the
St. Andrew’s Golf Club in Moka Maraval.
After a wet few days during the week, the
greens were receptive to a low scoring
round. Three promising members of last
year’s junior team took full advantage and
produced three sub-par rounds. Director of
Golf, Chris Harries was delighted with the
scores of thirteen year old Sachin Kumar
shooting five under par 67 and Wan Ju Lee
and Dinesh Jackree, both competing in the
Boys 14-15 category, shoot one under 71.
This year’s
team comprises a mix of experienced players
including sixteen year old Matthew Marquez
who returns home anxious to play in his
fourth Caribbean Junior Championship, Robert
Boocock a stalwart who will be competing for
his last time as a junior, and new comer to
the 13 and under category Sabrina Mitchell.
Mitchell is joined by Serena Mac Kenzie who
recently won the Girls 13 and Under category
at the Republic Bank sponsored Caribbean
Junior Championships.
The annual
tournament is held over 54 holes and sees
young players from eight countries compete
in three age group categories. Alongside the
grand prize of winning the Hank James Trophy
for the highest scoring country, is the
competition for the junior boys playing in
the Boys 16-17 and 14-15 age groups where
the highest accumulated score also wins the
country the chance to represent the region
at the qualifier for the Junior World Team
Championships.
